How to photograph jewellery for online stores (and what it costs in Dubai)

By Tasweer studio team · Last updated · 7 min read

TL;DR

  • Jewellery photography in Dubai starts at AED 1,800 for up to 20 pieces on white at our studio, or AED 1,500 for a 1-hour styled session with 3 edited photos per piece, excl. 5% VAT.
  • Reflective metal and stones need large diffused light sources, white and black cards, and focus stacking for edge-to-edge sharpness.
  • Marketplace main images go on pure white (Amazon.ae: RGB 255, 255, 255, product filling about 85% of the frame); styled and on-hand shots belong in additional images.
  • A good jewellery set is a white main image, a side or back angle, a macro detail, an on-hand or on-body scale shot and one lifestyle frame.
  • Hand models are an add-on with fees quoted up front; they are not included in package prices.

To photograph jewellery for online stores, use large diffused light to control reflections, shoot macro with focus stacking for sharp detail, and put the main image on pure white, with on-hand and styled shots as extras. At our Dubai studio, jewellery on white starts at AED 1,800 for up to 20 pieces (excl. 5% VAT).

Why is jewellery hard to photograph?

Jewellery is small, shiny and detailed, which is the hardest combination in product photography. Polished gold, silver and platinum behave like curved mirrors, so they reflect the camera, the photographer and the room. Diamonds and cut stones need light to enter and bounce back to show sparkle, and tiny pieces need macro lenses that have very shallow focus.

On top of that, buyers zoom. A ring that looks fine on a phone screen can show dust, fingerprints and polishing marks at full size. That is why jewellery takes longer per SKU than most products, and why retouching matters more.

How do you control reflections on metal and stones?

You control what the metal reflects, not the metal itself. The usual approach is to surround the piece with soft, white light so every reflection is clean and bright.

  • Use a light tent or large diffusion panels. These wrap the piece in even light so curved surfaces reflect white instead of the studio.
  • Add white and black cards. White cards brighten a band of metal; black cards add contrast lines that give polished metal its shape. All-white reflections make metal look flat.
  • Hide the camera. Shoot through a small hole in the diffusion, or angle the piece so the lens is not reflected.
  • Add small accent lights for stones. A small, harder light from above brings out sparkle in diamonds and faceted gems.
  • Wear gloves and clean first. Lint-free gloves and a blower save a lot of retouching time.

Do you need macro shots and focus stacking?

Yes, for anything small or detailed. A macro lens lets you fill the frame with a ring or pendant, but at that distance only a thin slice of the piece is sharp. Focus stacking solves this: you take several frames at different focus points and blend them, so the whole piece is sharp from front to back.

Macro detail shots are also the images that answer buyers' questions: the clasp, the hallmark, the stone setting, the texture of hand-finished metal. For a marketplace listing, one macro detail per SKU is usually enough. For high-value pieces, two or three detail shots, plus a 360° spin, give buyers the confidence to order without seeing the piece in person.

White background or styled shots for jewellery?

You need both, for different jobs. White-background images are for marketplace main images and consistent catalogue grids. Styled images, on stone, fabric, mirrors or props, are for additional images, your own website and Instagram.

A practical set for one SKU is: white main image, side or back angle, macro detail, on-hand shot and one lifestyle frame. For more on image counts, see how many images a product listing needs, and for the technical side of white backgrounds, our guide to white background product photography.

Should jewellery be shot on hand or on a model?

Yes, for at least one image per SKU, because it shows scale. A ring on a white background gives no sense of size; the same ring on a hand answers the question immediately. Earrings and necklaces benefit from a cropped on-body shot that shows how they sit.

Hand models need well-kept hands, neutral nails and steady positioning, and the shot is lit separately from the packshot. At our studio, a hand model is an add-on, and model casting fees are quoted up front; they are not included in package prices. If you need full on-model jewellery campaigns, see our guide to model costs for a photoshoot in Dubai.

What do Amazon.ae and Noon require for jewellery images?

The general main image rules apply: pure white background, the product filling most of the frame, and no added text, logos or watermarks. Amazon staff describe the white as RGB 255, 255, 255, with the product filling at least 85% of the frame. Noon's help centre asks for a front view on pure white, outside its packaging, with light shadows only and no hard reflections.

Amazon also has a separate jewellery style guide inside Seller Central. We could not read its current wording on a public page. One third-party summary says jewellery such as necklaces is an exception to the rule that products must not be cropped by the frame, but we have not confirmed that with Amazon, so treat it as unverified. Check your category guide before a big shoot, and read our full Amazon.ae image requirements and Noon image guidelines.

Frequently asked questions

How much does jewellery photography cost in Dubai?

At our Dubai studio, white-background jewellery images start at AED 1,800 for up to 20 pieces, or AED 150 to 250 per photo. Styled jewellery sessions start at AED 1,500 for 1 hour, with 3 edited photos per piece. All prices exclude 5% VAT.

Why does my jewellery look grey or dull in photos?

Polished metal is a mirror: it shows whatever surrounds it. If the room around it is dark or cluttered, the metal reflects that. Large white diffusers and white cards placed around the piece give clean, bright reflections.

Can I put jewellery on a model for my Amazon.ae main image?

We could not verify the current Amazon jewellery style guide from a public page, so we do not quote a rule. Safe practice is a product-only main image on pure white, with on-model and on-hand images as additional images. Check the jewellery style guide in your Seller Central account.

Do you retouch dust and scratches?

Yes. Dust, fingerprints and minor surface marks are removed as part of standard retouching. We do not change the design, stone count or metal colour, because images must show the product as it is sold.

Do you provide hand models?

Yes. A hand model is available as an add-on, and model casting fees are quoted up front before you book. They are not included in the package price.

Can you shoot 360 spins of rings and watches?

Yes. Our 360° spin and product video packages start at AED 1,800 for 5 products with 15-second loops, excl. 5% VAT. Spins work well for rings, where the setting and side profile matter.
