Ghost mannequin, flat-lay or on-model: which is best for abayas?
For most abaya listings, on-model or ghost mannequin wins. An abaya is defined by how it falls from the shoulder, and a flat-lay cannot show that length or movement. Ghost mannequin gives a consistent, faceless silhouette across a whole collection; on-model adds scale, sleeve shape and the way the fabric moves.
Flat-lay still earns its place for scarves, sheilas, inner dresses and detail sets, and it is the most economical way to show a matching set laid out together. Many brands combine the two: ghost mannequin for the main image, flat-lay for accessories and an on-model frame for the hero.
How do you photograph black fabric without losing the detail?
Black crepe, nida and chiffon swallow light, so we light them to bring out texture rather than simply brightening the frame. That means larger, angled sources that skim the weave, careful exposure so the blacks keep their depth, and separate frames for embroidery, beading and cuffs.
Every image is checked against the real garment before delivery, so a black abaya reads as true black and a navy or charcoal is not mistaken for it. That matters when a returned order costs more than the shoot.
What should a fashion brand shoot for a seasonal drop?
A practical drop shoot covers the catalogue first, then the content. Catalogue: front, back and detail for every style, in a consistent crop. Content: a short lookbook and a handful of 9:16 reels for Instagram and TikTok, ideally shot on the same day with the same styling so the feed and the store match.
Typical shot list
- Ghost mannequin front and back for every style
- Flat-lay sets for scarves, sheilas and inner dresses
- On-model full length, showing drape and sleeve shape
- Macro detail of embroidery, beading, cuffs and hems
- Fabric swatch close-ups for colour accuracy
- Lookbook frames in studio or on location
- 9:16 reels of movement for Instagram and TikTok
- Size and fit reference frames on model

Fashion & Abaya FAQ
How much does abaya photography cost in Dubai?
Ghost mannequin and flat-lay start at AED 900 for 15 garments, AED 2,400 for 40 garments with front, back and detail, and AED 6,000 for a full season. On-model lookbooks start at AED 2,000 for a 1-hour studio shoot with a model included. All prices exclude 5% VAT.
Can you provide modest models for abaya shoots?
Yes. We cast talent to your brief, including models comfortable with modest styling and hijab, with fees quoted up front. Hands-only and faceless options are available too.
Do you steam and prepare garments before the shoot?
Yes. Every garment is steamed, pinned and checked for threads and marks before it goes in front of the camera.
Can you match the colour of the image to the real fabric?
Yes. We shoot with a colour reference and check every file against the garment itself, so beige, sand and nude tones stay distinct.
Which sizes do you export for Namshi, Noon and Instagram?
We export a folder per platform: marketplace crops to each seller guideline, 4:5 for Instagram feed and 9:16 for stories and reels.
Can I drop off garments at the studio?
Yes, at our Dubai studio Monday to Friday, 9am to 6pm. Signature and Heirloom include free pickup and return across Dubai.
