How to photograph abayas for Namshi, Noon and Instagram

By Tasweer studio team · Last updated · 7 min read

TL;DR

  • Abaya photography at our Dubai studio starts at AED 900 for 15 garments on invisible mannequin or flat-lay (about AED 60 each), and on-model lookbooks start at AED 2,000 with a model included, excl. 5% VAT.
  • Black fabric needs soft, directional light and careful exposure so texture, embroidery and drape show instead of a flat silhouette.
  • Noon recommends on-model shots for adult apparel and a light grey background for fashion primary images; we could not find Namshi's own public image guidelines.
  • Every abaya needs front, back and at least one detail shot of sleeves, cuffs, embroidery or fabric.
  • Shoot square or portrait masters so you can export marketplace crops and 4:5 or 9:16 Instagram crops from one session.

To photograph abayas well, light the black fabric with soft directional light so texture and embroidery show, shoot front, back and detail on invisible mannequin or a model, and export marketplace and Instagram crops from one session. At our Dubai studio, abaya photography starts at AED 900 for 15 garments, excl. 5% VAT.

Why are abayas harder to photograph than other clothing?

Abayas are long, flowing and usually black, which makes them one of the harder garments to photograph well. A floor-length piece needs a tall frame and careful shaping so the hem falls straight. Black crepe, nida and chiffon absorb light, so detail disappears unless the lighting is deliberate. And the selling points are often small: a beaded cuff, a contrast lining, a pleated sleeve or a tonal embroidery that only shows at the right angle.

Colour accuracy matters too. Many "black" fabrics are slightly blue, brown or green under different light, and a customer who receives a different shade from the one on screen is likely to return it. We colour-match against the physical sample, but the shoot itself has to capture enough information to do that.

How do you light black fabric so detail shows?

Use soft, directional light and expose for the fabric, not the background. Flat front light makes black fabric look like a cut-out shape. Light from one side, or slightly behind, skims across the surface and shows the weave, pleats and drape.

  • Light from the side. A large softbox at 45 degrees or more shows texture and folds.
  • Add a rim or hair light. A light from behind separates the black garment from the background, especially on grey or dark sets.
  • Expose carefully. Exposing for a bright white background often crushes the black fabric. We light the background separately so both are correct.
  • Watch for shine. Satin and silk-blend abayas reflect hot spots; diffuse the light more and adjust the angle.
  • Shoot a colour reference. A grey card or colour chart in the first frame helps match the true shade in editing.

Ghost mannequin or on-model for abayas?

For most catalogues, ghost mannequin for every piece, plus on-model images for best-sellers and social media. Ghost mannequin (invisible mannequin) shows the shape and drape of the abaya with the mannequin removed in retouching. It is consistent across a large range and has no talent costs. On-model shows fit, movement and how the piece is styled, which matters for hero images and Instagram.

Flat-lay works for scarves, shaylas and kidswear, but it loses the drape of a long garment, so we rarely recommend it as the main image for abayas. Our guide to ghost mannequin vs flat-lay vs on-model compares the three styles in detail, including cost per garment.

Which detail shots does every abaya need?

At minimum, a front, a back and one close-up detail. Buyers cannot touch the fabric online, so detail shots do the job of the shop floor.

ShotWhy it matters
Full frontThe main image; shows silhouette and length
Full backShows pleats, back embroidery and cut
Side or three-quarterShows drape and volume, especially for butterfly and kimono styles
Sleeve and cuffBeading, lace and cuff details are often the reason to buy
Fabric close-upShows texture, weight and sheerness
Embroidery or embellishmentShows craftsmanship at zoom resolution
Lining or inner layerUseful for open abayas with contrast linings
Matching shaylaIf sold as a set, show it with the abaya

For couture and hand-finished pieces, our atelier and clothing design photography service focuses on stitching, fabric and embroidery close-ups.

How do you style a modest fashion shoot?

Keep the focus on the garment and the styling consistent with your brand's audience. In practice that means agreeing in advance on hijab or shayla styling, sleeve length, poses and make-up, so nothing has to be reshot.

  • Brief the model and stylist together. Share references for how the shayla is worn and which poses suit the cut.
  • Keep accessories simple. Shoes, a bag or minimal jewellery can add context without pulling focus.
  • Move with the fabric. A short walk or turn shows how the abaya flows; these frames also work as short videos.
  • Stay consistent. Same background, framing and pose set across the range makes a clean catalogue grid.

We cast models to your brief, and model fees are quoted up front; they are not included in package prices. For indicative market rates, see how much a model costs for a photoshoot in Dubai.

What do Namshi, Noon and Instagram need?

Each platform crops and checks images differently, so plan your masters to cover all three.

PlatformWhat we could verifyPractical approach
NoonSeller help centre recommends model shots for adult apparel and a light grey background for fashion primary images; JPEG, at least 660 px wide, under 10 MBOn-model front as primary, then back, side and detail in Noon's sequence
NamshiWe could not find Namshi's own public guidelines; a third-party integration guide lists a 0.73 aspect ratio for main imagesConsistent portrait set with front, back and detail; confirm the template with Namshi
InstagramReels can be uploaded at aspect ratios from 1.91:1 to 9:16, according to Instagram's help centre4:5 portrait for feed posts, 9:16 for reels and stories

Because abayas are tall, we shoot with space above and below so one master can be cropped to portrait, square and vertical video formats. Read the full Noon image guidelines before you upload.

Frequently asked questions

How much does abaya photography cost in Dubai?

At our Dubai studio, invisible mannequin or flat-lay abaya photography starts at AED 900 for 15 garments, front view only (about AED 60 per garment). Signature is AED 2,400 for 40 garments with front, back and detail. On-model lookbooks start at AED 2,000 for a 1-hour studio shoot with a model included. All prices exclude 5% VAT.

Why do black abayas look flat in photos?

Black fabric absorbs light, so with flat, even lighting the camera records a dark shape with no texture. Directional soft light, careful exposure and lifting the shadows in editing bring back the weave, pleats and embroidery.

Does Noon require on-model images for abayas?

Noon's seller help centre recommends model shots for adult apparel and a light grey background for fashion primary images. It is described as a recommendation, so check your category template before uploading.

What are Namshi's image requirements?

We could not find Namshi's own public image guidelines. A third-party integration guide lists main images at a 0.73 aspect ratio, but we have not confirmed that with Namshi, so ask your Namshi account contact for the current template.

Do you steam and shape the abayas?

Yes. Steaming and shaping are included on Signature ghost mannequin and flat-lay packages. Send garments on hangers if you can, and tell us about delicate embellishment before the shoot.

Do you provide modest fashion models?

Yes. We cast models to your brief, including modest styling with hijab or shayla, and quote model fees up front. Model fees are not included in package prices.
