Ghost mannequin vs flat-lay vs on-model for abaya and fashion brands
By Tasweer studio team · Last updated · 7 min read
TL;DR
- Ghost mannequin and flat-lay start at AED 900 for 15 garments (about AED 60 per garment); on-model lookbooks start at AED 2,000 for a 1-hour studio shoot with a model included, excl. 5% VAT.
- Ghost mannequin shows shape and drape without a model, so it suits abayas, kaftans and structured pieces.
- Flat-lay is the fastest and cheapest, best for scarves, shaylas, kidswear and accessories.
- On-model sells fit and movement and is what Noon recommends for adult apparel; it costs more because of models, hair and make-up.
- Most labels combine styles: ghost mannequin or flat-lay for the catalogue, on-model for hero images and social.
For most abaya and fashion brands in Dubai, ghost mannequin photography is the best catalogue style because it shows drape and shape without model costs, starting at AED 900 for 15 garments (about AED 60 each, excl. 5% VAT). Flat-lay suits scarves and kidswear, and on-model, from AED 2,000 with a model included, sells fit. Delivery takes 5 working days.
Ghost mannequin vs flat-lay vs on-model: which is best for abayas?
Ghost mannequin is usually best for abayas, because it shows how the garment hangs, from shoulder line to hem, without the cost of a model. Abayas are long, flowing and often black, so a style that keeps their shape and controls the fabric matters more than for a T-shirt.
- Ghost mannequin (also called invisible mannequin): the garment is shot on a mannequin, which is then removed in retouching, leaving a hollow, 3D shape. It shows structure, drape and length.
- Flat-lay: the garment is laid flat and styled from above. It is quick and consistent, but loses the sense of drape on a long garment.
- On-model: a model wears the garment. It shows fit, movement and how the piece is styled, and builds an emotional connection, but costs more and takes longer.
How do the three styles compare?
Each style wins on something different: ghost mannequin on shape per dirham, flat-lay on speed, on-model on fit and emotion.
| Factor | Ghost mannequin | Flat-lay | On-model |
|---|---|---|---|
| Shows drape and length | Very good | Limited | Excellent |
| Shows fit on a body | Partial | No | Excellent |
| Consistency across a catalogue | Excellent | Excellent | Good, depends on posing |
| Speed per garment | Medium | Fast | Slower |
| Retouching | Neck and inner joins | Light | Skin, hair and garment |
| Talent costs | None | None | Model, hair and make-up |
| Best for | Abayas, kaftans, jackets, dresses | Scarves, shaylas, kidswear, accessories | Hero images, lookbooks, social |
| Black fabric detail | Good with controlled lighting | Good | Good with controlled lighting |
Black abayas need careful lighting so the fabric shows texture and embroidery rather than becoming a flat silhouette. That applies to all three styles.

Which style do Amazon.ae, Noon and Namshi prefer?
Noon recommends on-model shots for adult apparel and flat-lay or hangers for kids' apparel, with a light grey background for fashion primary images. Amazon.ae and Namshi have their own conventions.
| Marketplace | What we could verify | Practical choice |
|---|---|---|
| Noon | Adult apparel: on-model recommended (except swimwear and underwear). Kids: flat-lay or hangers. Fashion background: light grey | On-model hero, plus ghost mannequin or flat-lay alternates |
| Amazon.ae | Clothing has a separate style guide in Seller Central covering model, flat and mannequin rules. Third-party summaries disagree on invisible mannequins, and we could not verify the current wording publicly | Pure white main image; check your category guide before choosing ghost mannequin |
| Namshi | A third-party integration guide lists JPEG main images at a 0.73 aspect ratio. We could not find Namshi's own public image guidelines | Consistent on-model or flat-lay set with front, back and detail |
| Own Shopify store / Instagram | No marketplace rules; consistency matters most | Ghost mannequin catalogue plus on-model lifestyle |
If you sell on more than one marketplace, plan the shoot around the strictest rule and export separate sets. Our Noon image guidelines and Amazon.ae image requirements guides cover the details.
When should you mix styles?
Mix styles when your catalogue is large but your hero products need to sell fit and movement. A common split for abaya labels:
- Ghost mannequin for every SKU: front, back and a detail of the embroidery or cuff.
- On-model for the top sellers: three or four images showing length, movement and styling.
- Flat-lay for accessories: shaylas, scarves and belts, often styled together.
- Short reels for social: a few seconds of movement does what a still cannot; see our Instagram reels cost guide.
This keeps the per-garment cost close to AED 60 for the full range while giving your best pieces the on-model images that convert on Noon, Namshi and Instagram.
How do you prepare garments for the shoot?
Send garments clean, unworn and in every colourway you sell, with a list of SKUs. We steam and shape garments on Signature, but a few steps on your side save time:
- Remove tags, pins and tissue, or tell us to leave them.
- Send one size consistently, usually the sample size, so the shape matches across the range.
- Flag any delicate embellishment, beading or hand embroidery.
- Include matching shaylas or belts if they are sold with the abaya.
Free pickup and return across Dubai is included on Signature and above. Tell us your garment count through the quote form and you get a firm price the same day.
Frequently asked questions
Is ghost mannequin or flat-lay better for abayas?
For most abayas, ghost mannequin is better because it shows the shoulder line, sleeve shape and drape as the garment would hang on a body. Flat-lay works for very simple, unstructured cuts or when budget and speed matter most.
How much does ghost mannequin photography cost in Dubai?
Our ghost mannequin and flat-lay packages start at AED 900 for 15 garments, front view only (about AED 60 per garment). Signature is AED 2,400 for 40 garments with front, back and detail shots. Prices exclude 5% VAT.
Do I need models for my abaya listings?
Not for every image. Many labels use ghost mannequin for the catalogue and add on-model images for best-sellers and social media. Noon recommends model shots for adult apparel, so on-model is worth it for Noon and Namshi hero images.
Can you arrange modest or female-only shoots?
We cast female, male, kids and hands-only talent, with fees quoted up front. Tell us your requirements for modest styling or a female-led crew when you enquire, and we confirm what is available for your date.
How long does a ghost mannequin shoot take to deliver?
Standard delivery is 5 working days. A 48-hour rush is available as an add-on, and the Heirloom package includes priority 48-hour selects.
Can you shoot embroidery and fabric details?
Yes. Signature ghost mannequin includes a detail shot per garment, and our atelier service adds macro fabric and embroidery close-ups from AED 2,200.
