White background product photography: why pure #FFFFFF matters
By Tasweer studio team · Last updated · 7 min read
TL;DR
- Pure white means RGB 255, 255, 255 (hex #FFFFFF), which Amazon staff describe as the standard for Amazon main images.
- A background that looks white to the eye often measures below 255 in editing software, which reads as grey next to the marketplace page.
- Light shadows are generally fine; Noon accepts light shadows only, and hard shadows or reflections are a rejection reason.
- White-background ecommerce photography at our Dubai studio starts at AED 1,800 for up to 20 products, or AED 150 to 250 per photo, excl. 5% VAT.
- Home lightboxes can work for small, matte products; reflective, large or colour-critical products usually need a studio.
Pure white means RGB 255, 255, 255 (hex #FFFFFF), the background Amazon describes for main images. It matters because an off-white background looks grey against the marketplace page and can get a main image flagged. Shoot it with a separately lit background, light shadows and clean edges; our Dubai studio starts at AED 1,800 for up to 20 products.
What does pure white #FFFFFF actually mean?
In digital images, each pixel has red, green and blue values from 0 to 255. Pure white is the maximum of all three: RGB 255, 255, 255, written in hex as #FFFFFF. Anything lower, such as 245, 245, 245, is a very light grey, even if it looks white on its own.
The eye is a poor judge of this. A background that looks white in the studio often measures 235 to 250 when you check it with an eyedropper tool, especially near the edges of the frame, where light falls off. You only notice the difference when the image sits on a pure white web page, where it shows as a faint grey box.
| Background value | How it looks on a white page | Marketplace main image |
|---|---|---|
| 255, 255, 255 | Blends into the page | Meets the pure white rule |
| 250 to 254 | Faint grey edge, often visible | Risky |
| 240 to 249 | Visible light grey box | Likely to be flagged on Amazon |
| Cream or tinted | Coloured box | Not compliant |
Why do marketplaces insist on pure white?
Because search results are a grid. On Amazon.ae and Noon, main images sit side by side on a white page, and pure white backgrounds make every product look like it floats on the same surface. Amazon staff describe the main image rule as a pure white background, RGB 255, 255, 255, with the product filling at least 85% of the frame.
Noon's seller help centre asks for a pure white background on the primary image, with light grey recommended for fashion, and says hard shadows and hard reflections are not accepted. Full details are in our guides to Amazon.ae image requirements and Noon image guidelines.
How do you get a pure white background in camera?
Light the background separately from the product. The background needs to be slightly brighter than the product so it records as pure white, while the product is exposed correctly.
- Use a white sweep or lit panel. A seamless curve removes the horizon line behind the product.
- Light the background on its own. One or two lights aimed at the background push it to pure white.
- Light the product separately. Softboxes on the product keep colour and texture accurate.
- Avoid overdoing it. Too much background light spills back and makes edges glow or soft, which looks fake and loses detail.
- Check with a histogram or eyedropper. Confirm the background reads 255 in all channels before you shoot the whole range.
In practice, most studios get close in camera and then clean the background to exact white in editing, so every image in the catalogue matches.
Should product photos have shadows on white?
A light, soft shadow under the product is generally fine and makes it look grounded rather than pasted in. Noon's help centre explicitly allows light shadows and rejects hard shadows. Amazon's public guidance focuses on the pure white background; a soft contact shadow is common practice, but a dark or wide shadow can make the background read as grey.
| Shadow type | Look | Our approach |
|---|---|---|
| None | Product floats | Fine for some categories, can look flat |
| Soft contact shadow | Grounded, natural | Our default for marketplace mains |
| Reflection | Premium, glossy | Additional images or own website |
| Hard or wide shadow | Heavy, grey background | Avoid on main images |
What is a clipping path and when do you need one?
A clipping path is a precise outline drawn around the product, usually by hand with a pen tool, so the original background can be removed and replaced with pure white. It gives clean, sharp edges and lets you place the product on any background later.
You need one when the product was not shot on white, when the background has marks or uneven light, or when you want the same product on white and on a coloured background. Automatic background removal is fast and works well on simple shapes, but it often struggles with hair, fur, frayed fabric, glass, jewellery chains and anything transparent. Those edges usually need manual work.
Can you shoot white background photos at home?
Yes, for small, matte products, if you are prepared to edit every image. A lightbox, two daylight-balanced lights and a phone on a tripod can produce usable images for products like boxed goods, soaps or matte accessories.
| Product type | Home setup | Studio |
|---|---|---|
| Small, matte items | Often workable with editing | Faster and more consistent |
| Glass, jewellery, chrome | Hard to control reflections | Recommended |
| Large items, furniture | Not enough space or light | Recommended |
| Clothing | Needs mannequin or model | Recommended |
| Colour-critical products | Colour casts are common | Recommended |
| 50+ SKUs | Time-consuming | Batch shooting is quicker |
The hidden cost of a home setup is time: editing each image to exact white, fixing colour casts and keeping framing consistent across a range. For a large catalogue, a studio batch is usually more practical.

Frequently asked questions
What RGB value is pure white for Amazon?
Pure white is RGB 255, 255, 255, which is hex #FFFFFF. Amazon's main image guidance asks for a pure white background, and Amazon staff and sellers describe it as RGB 255, 255, 255.
How do I check if my background is pure white?
Open the image in an editor such as Photoshop or GIMP and use the eyedropper or info panel on several points of the background, especially the corners and near the product. Every point should read 255, 255, 255.
Does Noon require pure white too?
Noon's seller help centre asks for a pure white background on the primary image, except for fashion, where it recommends light grey. Light shadows are accepted; hard shadows and hard reflections are not.
Is a clipping path the same as background removal?
A clipping path is one method of background removal: a precise vector outline drawn around the product so the background can be replaced. Automatic tools are faster but often struggle with hair, fabric edges, glass and fine detail.
Will a home lightbox give me a pure white background?
Usually not straight out of camera. Most home lightboxes produce a background that measures slightly grey, so the image still needs editing. They work best for small, matte products.
