Perfume bottle photography: lighting glass and oud without reflections
By Tasweer studio team · Last updated · 7 min read
TL;DR
- Styled perfume photography at our Dubai studio starts at AED 1,500 for a 1-hour session with 3 edited photos per bottle, excl. 5% VAT.
- Glass is lit from behind and the sides with large diffused sources, using white or black cards to draw clean edge lines instead of hot spots.
- Marketplace main images show the bottle alone on pure white; Noon asks for products outside their packaging, with light shadows and no hard reflections.
- Smoke, oud chips, florals and textured stone belong in additional images and campaign work, not the main image.
- Highly reflective bottles take longer to light and retouch, so we confirm a firm price once we see the range.
To photograph perfume bottles without reflections, light the glass from behind and the sides with large diffused sources, use cards to draw clean edges, and keep the room around the bottle controlled. Main images go on pure white, while oud, smoke and props are for campaign shots. Our Dubai studio starts at AED 1,500 for a 1-hour session (excl. 5% VAT).
Why are perfume bottles so hard to photograph?
A perfume bottle is clear glass, coloured liquid, a polished or metallic cap and a printed label, all in one small object. Each part needs different lighting. Glass reflects and refracts everything around it, so a light pointed straight at the bottle shows up as a bright hot spot, and the camera, the photographer and the studio walls can appear in the surface.
Then there is dust. Glass shows every fingerprint and speck at zoom resolution, and heavy crystal bottles with facets multiply the problem. That is why perfume is one of the categories where lighting and retouching time per SKU is higher than average.
| Element | Common problem | Usual fix |
|---|---|---|
| Clear glass | Hot spots, reflections of the room | Backlight and side light through diffusion |
| Glass edges | Bottle disappears into a white background | Black cards to draw dark edge lines |
| Liquid | Looks muddy or too dark | Light from behind, white card behind the bottle |
| Metal or gold caps | Reflect the camera or surroundings | Tent the cap, add white and black cards |
| Labels | Glare or low contrast | Separate light angled for the label |
| Dust and fingerprints | Visible on zoom | Gloves, cleaning, careful retouching |
How do you light glass without reflections?
You do not remove reflections from glass; you choose them. The classic approach is to light from behind and the sides, so light passes through the glass and wraps around its edges, instead of hitting the front.
- Backlight through diffusion. A large softbox or lit panel behind the bottle makes the glass glow evenly.
- Use strip lights on the sides. Long, narrow softboxes create clean vertical highlights that show the bottle's shape.
- Draw edges with black cards. On a white background, black cards just out of frame create dark outlines so the bottle does not disappear.
- Flag the front. Block stray light from hitting the front of the bottle, where it would create hot spots.
- Control the room. Dark or neutral surroundings mean there is less to reflect.
Many shots are built from several exposures, one for the glass, one for the label and one for the cap, combined in editing. This is normal practice for premium bottles.
How do you show the colour of the liquid?
Light the liquid from behind. A white card or soft light placed directly behind the bottle, sized to the bottle's shape and hidden by it, makes amber, rose and gold fragrances glow instead of looking brown or black.
Colour accuracy matters because customers compare the image with the bottle they receive. We colour-match against the physical sample and keep the same set-up across a range, so a collection of fragrances reads as a consistent family.
How do you handle caps, labels and boxes?
Treat them as separate lighting jobs. Polished or gold caps need their own reflections controlled, often with a small tent or cards. Labels need a light angled so the print reads without glare. Embossed or foil boxes need raking light to show texture.
For marketplace main images, shoot the bottle on its own. Noon's seller help centre asks for the primary image to show the product outside its packaging. Then add a bottle-with-box image as an additional image, which is useful for gifting and for showing what arrives.
How do you style oud, bakhoor and smoke?
Oud, bakhoor and Arabian fragrances usually suit warm, low-key styling: dark wood, brass burners, textured stone, oud chips and a trail of smoke. This is styled product photography, not catalogue work, so it takes more set-up time and props.
- Smoke is unpredictable. Real incense smoke looks natural but moves constantly. We often shoot several smoke frames and combine the best one with the product shot.
- Keep the bottle hero. Props should frame the product, not compete with it.
- Match the brand. Some houses want desert tones and gold; others want minimal black and stone. A moodboard agreed before the shoot avoids reshoots.
- Add motion. Smoke, pouring and slow turns work well as short videos and reels.
Marketplace main image or campaign shot?
You need both, and they follow different rules. Marketplace main images must show only the product on a pure white background. Amazon staff describe this as RGB 255, 255, 255, with the product filling at least 85% of the frame and no added text or logos. Noon asks for light shadows only and no hard reflections on the primary image.
| Image | Background | Props | Where it is used |
|---|---|---|---|
| Main image | Pure white | None | Amazon.ae, Noon, Shopify grid |
| Angles and details | White or neutral | None | Additional marketplace images |
| Bottle with box | White | Box only | Additional image, gifting |
| Lifestyle | Styled set | Oud, florals, stone, smoke | Additional images, website, Instagram |
| Campaign | Art-directed set | Custom | Launches, ads, billboards |
For the technical side of white backgrounds, read white background product photography, and check the Amazon.ae image requirements and Noon image guidelines before uploading.

Frequently asked questions
How much does perfume bottle photography cost in Dubai?
At our Dubai studio, styled perfume photography starts at AED 1,500 for a 1-hour session, with 3 edited photos per bottle. White-background only starts at AED 1,800 for up to 20 products, or AED 150 to 250 per photo. All prices exclude 5% VAT.
Can the perfume box be in my Amazon.ae or Noon main image?
On Noon, the primary image should show the product outside its packaging, according to its seller help centre. Amazon's general rule is that the main image shows only the product being sold; some sellers include the box, so check your category guide. We usually shoot bottle-only mains and add a bottle-with-box image as an additional image.
Is the smoke in perfume photos real?
It can be either. Real smoke from incense or a smoke machine looks natural but is unpredictable, so we often shoot it separately and combine it in editing. Either way, smoke belongs in lifestyle and campaign images, not marketplace main images.
Why does my perfume bottle look grey or dirty in photos?
Clear glass shows whatever is behind and around it. A cluttered or dark room, fingerprints and dust all show up. Clean the bottle with gloves on and light it against a controlled, bright background.
Do you photograph bakhoor and oud chips?
Yes. Oud chips, bakhoor and burners are shot as styled product photography, often with smoke and warm, low-key lighting. They also work well in short videos and reels.
Can you make 360 spins of perfume bottles?
Yes. Our 360° spin and product video packages start at AED 1,800 for 5 products with 15-second loops, excl. 5% VAT. Spins show the bottle shape and cap design from every angle.
